    This is a friendly reminder that applications for the Goethe-Institut Language Proficiency Scholarships for 2018 are closing soon. Please forward this to anyone who might be interested:

    Current and future teachers of German, (DipEd/BEd/Bteach Students), librarians managing the Goethe-Institut’s Resource Centres, principals and persons in key positions in education with a good basic knowledge of German can apply for a four-week German language course at a Goethe-Institut in Germany. Language Course scholarships offer the opportunity to improve and update German language skills in a German-speaking environment. The cultural and leisure program offered within the course will enable to learn more about Germany. Furthermore, all course locations offer the option to prepare for internationally recognised German language exams.

    Teachers from SA, TAS, VIC and WA apply through our Melbourne office.
    Teachers from ACT, NSW, NT and QLD apply through our Sydney office.

    Application deadline: 10 September 2017

    Application forms are available here: https://www.goethe.de/ins/au/en/spr/unt/for/deu/sps.html

    We are currently trying to assess amongst Adelaide's German language students and teachers the need for local official German language examinations, as offered by the 'Goethe-Zertifikate' A1, A2, B1 and B2 (and possibly even C1 and C2) within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

    Given that Adelaide is one of only a very few cities in Australia where these examinations are not currently offered, we - in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Melbourne - are trying to investigate whether there is enough interest to warrant introducing this facility to South Australia from as early as 2018.

    In order to help us work out the local need, we would very much appreciate if you could kindly indicate (by a simple reply email) whether or not you would be interested in taking any of these examinations over the course of the next three years - and if so, at which level.

    Please note that all 'Goethe-Zertifikate' incur an examination fee depending on the level, currently ranging from about $100 (A1) to about $200 (B2).

    We really appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you.

    There have been significant changes to University bonus scheme.

    The SA Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme encourages students to strengthen their preparation for university studies by undertaking a language other than English, or specified English and Mathematics subjects. The Scheme will apply to all courses offered by Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and University of South Australia except:

    Flinders University:

    • 214941 Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine

    The University of Adelaide:

    • 314552 Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery
    • 324491 Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)

    In this Scheme, students will be awarded two points, up to a total maximum of four points, for successfully completing a subject in any one of these four categories:

    • 20 credits of a LOTE in the Languages Learning Area (not including the subject Language and Culture – two 10 credit Australian indigenous language subjects can be paired in lieu of a 20 credit LOTE);
    • 2END20 English Studies or 2ECS20 English Communications;
    • 2MDS20 Mathematical Studies;
    • 2MSC20 Specialist Mathematics.

    Successful completion is defined as gaining an Overall Grade of C- or better. Because the Scheme is designed to encourage enrolments in these subjects rather than reward outcomes, no higher bonuses will be granted for higher achievement. Subject bonuses can be used for a period of three years. Thus a student receiving an ATAR in 2015 with successful completion of one or more of the subjects listed above will be able to use their bonus for entry to higher education courses in 2016, 2017 and 2018, but not thereafter. Students undertaking the International Baccalaureate or interstate senior secondary certificates in Australia are also eligible to receive bonuses under this Scheme. International Baccalaureate and interstate subjects equivalent to the SACE/NTCET subjects listed above are shown in the table “Interstate/IB subjects pre-approved as Recognised Studies” accessible via SATAC’s information on Recognised Studies:

    www.satac.edu.au/pages/recognised-studies.
